Foreign Exchange Students: All-American Fashion in Screen Printed T shirts
Universities nowadays are teeming with foreign students, whether on a short-term or long-term exchange program or are now living in the US. These students come from countries which include, but not limited to, Kuwait, Brazil, Germany, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. Short term exchange program usually takes place in the summer months July to August. These students don't attend school but emphasis is more on sightseeing and cultural learning. Long-term exchange program is designed to last six to ten months or could last the full year. The students study in high school and integrate with host families, living as a natural child and expected to immerse themselves in the community. Both those in short and long-term exchange programs are expected to make their presentations of their experiences to their sponsors and be able to incorporate everything they have learned in their daily lives.
These students find life in the US and as a student very different from what they have in their own countries. They find life as a student less stressful here in the US compared to their own, especially for the Chinese exchange students because parents in China put pressure on their children to excel in school. Although they agree that there is more homework here but they say classes are easier and less formal because they do not have to raise their hands and stand when called. These students have noticed that there is more emphasis on team spirit through high school varsity team sports. Although they like that children have more freedom they also see the other side of it where it can cause a negative effect where in some cases the children don't really respect their parents. What they enjoy also is the fact that the atmosphere is more relaxed where students are allowed to be themselves.
The relaxed atmosphere they say extends to how they go about during the day in simple outfits or what we call the students staple look of skinny jeans and skinny t shirts. As teenagers these students are most often in screen printed tees when they had school uniforms in their countries. They love it that it's so easy to go shopping with friends. T shirt printing is one of the trendiest ways to get the casual tees they love to wear with the t shirt design they have always wanted. And with the end of their exchange program, the fashion sense they have gained from some US friends is one thing they will take with them especially because they have also discovered online stores where designing their own shirts is possible and that ships internationally. One of the foreign exchange student has even developed her entrepreneurial spirit and thinking of bringing the style to her country because she knows that the fashion style of people her age whether in her country or in other countries are the same and that means her screen printed t shirts would be a huge success, if ever she pushes through with it. She has definitely learned that for American students casual and cool are the same thing and maybe it would be the same with all students.
