Fly $14.38 If your ears are starved for innovative jazz that blends punchy sax lines and dense, wild, worldbeat-flavored bass and drum rhythms, let this newly formed trio with an amazing pedigree fill the bill. Mark Turner was a sax star in the late '90s who was looking for a new situation, which he stumbled upon while working on a Chick Corea project called Originations, which included old friends Larry Grenadier (bassist for Pat Metheny and Joshua Redman) and drummer Jeff Ballard (Corea, Redman, Danilo Perez). If the swinging bass and percussion patterns weren't so tight and Turner's sax wasn't this melodic and precise, Fly might seem like it was three pals just having fun, as the exotic opening track, "Child's Play," might indicate. Essentially, the concept seems to be the trio listening and responding to each other in a frolicsome manner. On "Fly Mr. Freakjar," Turner is more eloquent and restrained as his cohorts rumble happily around him, as if trying to get him to loosen up (he does after a few minutes). Other highlights include the funky jazz centerpiece "JJ," on which Turner wraps his sometimes honking horn around increasingly dense percussion patterns and bass swirls. The disc slows down in the middle, favoring subtlety over insanity, but is happily rescued by the energetic "Todas las Cosas Se Van" and the funky, melodic, marching drum-driven Hendrix cover "Spanish Castle Magic." Fly is definitely a cooperative by three major jazz talents, but by the end you'll remember Ballard's mostly in-your-face drum lines the most. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi Performers: Jeff Ballard - Drums; Larry Grenadier - Bass |

On the Fly $12.78 The name refers to the Parker Fly, Keaggy's primary guitar on this project, but rather than being just a showcase for the guitar this is also another fine instrumental outing from Christian music's most influential guitarist. Keaggy focuses more on sound and technique than on previous albums, resulting in an album with exquisite arrangment and ambience in addition to excellent compositions. He also develops these songs to their fullest, particularly on the five-part suite "The Way of a Pilgrim" and the 24 minute "The Sojourner." Many of the songs include a very supportive rhythm section that broadens each piece while not intruding on Keaggy's superior musicianship; other pieces are simply layers of acoustic guitar. Hi-Fly $15.27 Many critics have lamented the relatively rare appearance of memorable male jazz vocalists over a stretch of several decades. Sachal Vasandani is a promising singer gifted with a wide range and an expressive, strong tone that brings out the essence of each lyric. His third CD finds him backed by pianist Jeb Patton (whose work with the Heath Brothers has garnered considerable praise), bassist David Wong, and drummer Kendrick Scott. The imaginative arrangement of the standard "The Very Thought of You" is a group effort with a strong assist from Erik Privert, utilizing a breezy Latin rhythm and featuring a potent backing line by guest John Ellis on tenor sax. Two duets feature the legendary vocalist Jon Hendricks: a hilarious rendition of "One Mint Julip," which also has some fun-filled scat singing by both men, and Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly," which adds a newly written lyric by Vasandani. The leader's rich voice is best on display with his thoughtful interpretation of "Here Comes the Honey Man" (a duet with Patton), which segues directly into "There's a Boat That's Leaving Soon for New York" (both pieces are from George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess), the latter in which Vasandani's vocal sounds as if it has long been part of his repertoire. The singer also penned several originals, including the hip "Babe's Blues" (featuring the rising young trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire) and the haunting, deliberate ballad "Flood."
