Do Mosquito Magnets Really Work?
Mosquito Magnets are the most widely recognized brand name mosquito traps on the market today but do they really work like they are supposed to? The answer to that question is yes...and no. There are definite pros AND cons to owning a Mosquito Magnet.
First, it may be helpful to give a quick description of why mosquitoes are attracted to us in the first place and how the Mosquito Magnet actually works to eliminate the threat of disease from our homes and yards.
Female mosquitoes (the biters) are extremely attracted to human blood because of the proteins our blood contains. Mosquitoes use this protein to aid them in their reproductive cycle allowing them to lay more eggs (up to 400+ eggs on a single drop of water).
Mosquito Magnets release a constant stream of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) mimicking the human breath. Mosquitoes are instinctively lured to the Magnet thinking they are about to have a nice little meal but are instead vacuumed into a net via the Magnet's patented Counter-Flow Technology.
Once in the net, the mosquitoes quickly dehydrate and die. And though the "Magnets" attract a significantly large number of the pesky biters, the real effectiveness of the Mosquito Magnet lies in it's ability to completely disrupt the breeding cycle of the captured female mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes do not migrate much. But they do reproduce at an extremely high rate - this is the reason your yard can get infested by them. But when the females are attracted and vacuumed into the net, they are unable to reproduce and this prevents them from releasing more mosquitoes into your yard.
So do Mosquito Magnets effectively eliminate the threat of mosquitoes from your yard? Absolutely! Most owners are amazed at the results after just a few weeks of use.
With that being said, however, there are definite downsides to owning one. A number of owners have complained that even though their model worked like a charm the first time around, their Magnets stopped working after the first or second year of heavy use.
Furthermore, to be effective, "Magnets" require frequent propane-tank refills and Octenol (attractant) replacements. Though not extremely costly, these add-on costs start to add up after a few seasons.
Bottom line? If you're looking for a way to free your yard from harassing and disease-infested mosquitoes, Mosquito Magnets are extremely effective...but be prepared to spend a little more money than you originally bargained for!
